Kristina Blaumane

 

Kristina Blaumane is recognized as one of most exciting cellists today. She is invited to perform as soloist with orchestra, recitalist and chamber musician around the world.

 
As a chamber musician, she has worked in partnership with such renowned artists as Isaac Stern, Gidon Kremer, Yo Yo Ma, Yuri Bashmet, Leiv Ove Andsnes, Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Maxim Rysanov, Bruno Giuranna, Misha Maisky, Nikolaj Znaider, Tatyana Grindenko or Oleg Maisenberg, among others.

 
She has performed as soloist with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, Britten Sinfonia, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Latvian National Opera Orchestra, Sinfonietta Riga, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Sofia Soloists, Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Dalarna Sinfonietta, and others.


Kristina has performed at international music festivals as Lockenhaus, Gstaad, Salzburg, Verbier, Basel, Jerusalem, Utrecht, Spitalfields, Cheltenham, Aldeburgh, Homecoming and Crescendo.


In 2007 Kristina released her debut recital CD with Jacob Katsnelson for Quartz. The album comprises of sonatas by Barber and Grieg, and Variations on a Slovakian Theme by Martinu. During the past seasons, she has performed Brahms’s Trio Op. 114 on the award-winning recording of Brahms’s chamber music works (BrahmsViola/Rysanov) for Onyx. In January 2011 the Second Volume of Brahms’s chamber works was released (Onyx), where Kristina is playing in both Clarinet Quintet Op 115 and String Quintet Op 111 along violinists Boris Brovtsyn and Alexander Sitkovetsky, and violists Maxim Rysanov and Julia Deineka. Kristina is also performing on Shostakovich Piano Quintet, recorded beside the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s leaders and Martin Helmchen, released on April 2011.


This year Kristina is planning to release a new recital album consisting of works by Beethoven, as well as Dobrinka Tabakova's Cello Concerto (dedicated to her) for ECM.


Kristina is a keen promoter of new music. She has made a number of world premiers, and several works are dedicated to her. She collaborates closely with Dobrinka Tabakova, who composed her Cello Concerto for Kristina (premiered at the International Cello Festival in Amsterdam), and more recently composed “Sun Triptych” for Violin, Cello and Strings (dedicated to Kristina Blaumane, Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica).


Kristina was born in Riga in a family of musicians. After graduating from Latvian Academy of Music, where she studied with Eleonora Testeleca, Kristina moved to United Kingdom, where she studied with Stefan Popov at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  


She is the recipient of several prizes and awards as the Latvian Philharmonic Young Musician of the Year, Latvian Television Competition “Alternativa”, Carmel International Competition, Musicians Benevolent Fund and Lord Mayor’s Prize. 


Kristina has been laureated twice with the Great Music Award, the highest prize given by the Latvian State in the field of music (2005 and 2007).


Since 2007 Blaumane combines her busy career with a principal cello position in the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
