At the age of 16, Basque pianist Marta Zabaleta was awarded First Prize at her graduation from San Sebastián Conservatory. She went on to attend the most prestigious European academies: the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris under Dominique Merlet, the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid with Dmitri Bashkirov and the Marshall Academy in Barcelona with Alicia de Larrocha, always attaining the highest marks.

Ms Zabaleta has won a series of important prizes in international competitions: Best Spanish Pianist in Santander, as well as the Premio Jaén, the European Chopin Piano Competition in Darmstadt and the Pilar Bayona International Piano Competition in Zaragoza. Apart from solo recitals, her piano concerto performances have led her to appear with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonieorchester (Berlin), the Basque Euskadi National Orchestra (San Sebastián) and the Spanish RadioTelevision National Orchestra (RTVE), as well as the symphony orchestras of Bilbao, Extremadura, Castilla y León, Murcia, Comunidad de Madrid, Galicia, Córdoba, Málaga, Granada and Valencia, under the baton of outstanding conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Daniele Gatti, Harry Christophers, Sergiu Comissiona, Cristian Mandeal, Mario Venzago, Gilbert Varga, Günter Neuhold, Jean-Christophe Spinossi, Georg Pehlivanian, Arturo Tamayo, Juanjo Mena, Dorian Wilson, Luca Pfaff, Juan Ramón Encinar, Jesús Amigo, Max Bragado-Darman, G. I. Ramos and Christopher Wilkins.

In chamber music, Marta Zabaleta shares the stage with cellist Asier Polo (with whom she played a recital at Carnegie Hall), with pianist Miguel Borges Coelho and with the Ysaye Quartet, among others.

Marta Zabaleta has made a number of recordings. In a project for EMI International, she collaborated in recording the complete works of Joaquín Rodrigo. A further release is available on the CLAVES label featuring Francisco Escudero’s “Basque Concerto” for piano and orchestra. For the Spanish RadioTelevision RTVE label, she has recorded Angel Martín Pompey’s Double Piano Concerto, and a further duo CD with cellist Asier Polo is part of the BBK series (Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa).

Marta Zabaleta is piano professor at Musikene (the Higher Academy of Music of the Basque Country in San Sebastián). She has also taken up the responsibility of directing the Marshall Academy in Barcelona, in accordance with the expressed wish of her predecessor Alicia de Larrocha.

She recently won the Albeniz Medal granted by Fundación Pública Isaac Albéniz.
