Baritone Damián del Castillo recently performed the role of Aeneas in a concert version of Purcell’s opera “Dido and Aeneas”. His performance on various Andalusian stages was outstanding. The premiere took place on January 10th at Jerez’ Teatro Villamarta. The next day, the concert took place at Granada’s Auditorio Manuel de Falla, and then on the 12th at Malaga’s Teatro Cervantes. The singer was accompanied by an exceptional cast, the Joven Orquesta Barroca Andaluza and the Joven Coro de Andalucia, conducted by Michael Thomas. The singer’s performance was critically acclaimed.

“… and Damián del Castillo’s Aeneas – a baritone we had never heard before in this type of repertoire, giving a pleasantly surprising performance with exquisite timbres and phrasing appropriately done in the Baroque style.” J. Luis de La Rosa (Diario de Jerez)

The singer performed last month as a soloist in Handel’s “Messiah”. Two concerts were held at Cordoba’s Gran Teatro with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Córdoba and the Coro Ziryab. His outstanding performance received a huge round of applause from both the audience and the critics.

“Damián del Castillo, the bass invited for the occasion… proved to be a singer with a beautiful, agile voice and excellent projection” F. Javier Santos (ABC)

The singer will soon return to the ABAO season, performing in Georges Bizet’s “Carmen”.
