Gregory Kunde heads the cast of Idomeneo, by Mozart, at Les Arts of Valencia

The Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía is set to premiere Mozart's Idomeneo on April 21st. This new production, the first undertaken by Les Arts in 2016, is being directed by Davide Livermore, the current director of the theatre. The remaining performances will take place on April 24th, April 28th, May 1st and May 4th.

Gregory Kunde (Idomeneo) heads the cast, along with the soprano Carmen Romeu (Elettra). Fabio Biondi, the musical director of the production, will stand before the Orquesta de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana. Also taking part in the production, among others, are Monica Bacelli (Idamante), Lina Mendes (Ilia), Emmanuel Faraldo (Arbace) and Michael Borth (High Priest of Neptune).

This will be the second time Gregory Kunde performs at the Palau de les Arts this season, as part of its 10th opera season. The American tenor, “one of the pillars of the theatre's artistic project”, according to Livermore, sings the role of Idomeneo. This role allows the tenor to use the experience gained in life, “because it examines questions that arise frequently in someone my age, like your relationship with your God and with your children”, Kunde stated at the press conference.

In recent months Kunde has sung Otello, by Rossini, at La Scala in Milan, as well as Aida at the Verona Arena, Norma at the Liceu, La Fenice and the Munich Opera, and Il Trovatore at La Fenice and in A Coruña. He also performed the role of Roberto Devereux in Bilbao and in Madrid, opening Teatro Real’s current season. At the Teatro de la Maestranza of Seville he recently performed Verdi’s Otello and not long ago he also sang Rossini’s Otello at the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona.  In January of this year he added the role of Samson to his repertoire, performing in the Samson et Dalila staged at Les Arts of Valencia.

Gregory Kunde’s upcoming engagements also include Otello (May Festival-Cincinnati) with James Conlon and a concert at the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona. In addition, Gregory Kunde will open next season at the Teatro Real of Madrid, singing the title role of Otello by Verdi and soon thereafter in Norma by Bellini. He will also be returning to the Royal Opera House of London to again sing Il trovatore and Otello by Verdi.
