Gregory Kunde sings Rossini’s Otello, at Barcelona’s Liceu

This February 3rd and 6th, the American tenor Gregory Kunde will perform the concert version of Otello, by Giacomo Rossini, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Kunde is one of the few tenors to have taken on both Otellos, the one by Verdi and the one by Rossini. In fact the American singer has managed to sing both roles in a single season and even, last year, in a single month.

Gregory Kunde is currently one of the world’s most highly sought-after tenors. He was recently honoured at the 2015 Campoamor Theatre Opera Awards, the Oscars of Spanish opera, where he received the “Best Male Opera Singer” award for the second time in three years, having also won it in the 2013 edition.

In recent months he has sung Otello, by Rossini, at La Scala in Milan, as well as Aida at the Verona Arena, Norma at the Liceu, La Fenice and the Munich Opera, and Il Trovatore at La Fenice and in A Coruña. He also performed the role of Roberto Devereux in Bilbao and in Madrid, opening Teatro Real’s current season. At the Teatro de la Maestranza of Seville he recently performed Verdi’s Otello. And in January of this year he added the role of Samson to his repertoire, performing in the Samson et Dalila put on at Les Arts de Valencia.

Gregory Kunde will soon be appearing in another new role, that of Renato des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, which is to be performed in Bilbao. We will also have the chance to see him in Idomeneo at Les Arts de Valencia, in Les Troyens at the Hamburg Opera, in Otello at the Cincinnati Opera, with James Conlon, and in Il Trovatore at the Royal Opera House of London, with Maestro Noseda.

Among other important singers, the cast accompanying Gregory Kunde in Barcelona will include the British-born, Australian-raised soprano Jessica Pratt, who will be singing the role of Desdemona, Dmitry Korchak, in the role of Rodrigo and Yijie Shi as Iago. In the pit will be Christopher Franklin conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro del Gran Teatre del Liceu.
