Gregory Kunde will be Calaf in Turandot, a new production by the Teatro Real of Madrid

From November 30th to December 30th the Teatro Real will be staging Turandot, with musical direction by Nicola Luisotti and stage direction, set design and lighting by Bob Wilson. It is a co-production by the Teatro Real and the Canadian Opera Company, the National Theatre of Lithuania and the Houston Grand Opera. This spectacular opera also has a stellar cast that includes Gregory Kunde as Calaf. Irene Theorin and Yolanda Auyanet, singing the title role and Liù, respectively, will be on stage with the American tenor, who has recently sung the role with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta, and at the past edition of the Arena di Verona Festival. Puccini's final work is one of the high points of the current season at the Teatro Real and all of its 18 performances will be dedicated to the memory of Montserrat Caballè, known for her fabulous interpretations of both Liù and Turandot.

Kunde’s recent engagements include Jean de Leyden (Le prophète) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Don Alvaro (La forza del destino) at the Semperoper Dresden, Pollione (Norma) for the Opéra Royal de Wallonie and in Bilbao, the title role of Peter Grimes at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, Radames (Aida) at the Teatro Real, Madrid, and a return to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for the title role of Verdi’s Otello and Manrico (Il trovatore).
In concert, recent highlights include Das Lied von der Erde at the BBC Proms, Verdi’s Requiem in Bilbao, the title role of Verdi’s Otello at the Cincinnati May Festival, title role of Peter Grimes with Sir Antonio Pappano at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Faust (La damnation de Faust) in concert at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Charles Dutoit.

Highlights in the 2018/19 season include the title role Andrea Chénier and Radames (Aida) at the Wiener Staatsoper, Renato des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) for Opera di Roma on tour in Japan and in concert at the Dallas Opera, the title role Otello for Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Calaf (Turandot) at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Das lied von der Erde with the Orquesta de Valencia at Palau de la Música, a recital at Palma de Mallorca,  Verdi’s Requiem with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta and a return to the podium to conduct Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatro La Fenice.
