Manuel Coves conducts La malquerida, by Manuel Penella, at Los Teatros del Canal


La malquerida, a zarzuela based on Jacinto Benavente's play of the same name, comes to Los Teatros del Canal on February 28th. The last work by Manuel Penella, the author of El gato montés, will be performed through March 5th. In this production the rural drama takes place in Mexico, and the staging is inspired by Mexican cinema of the 1930s. The stage direction is by the Valencia-born director Emilio López. This co-production by Los Teatros del Canal and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía of Valencia will be conducted by Manuel Coves.
Recent performances by Maestro Coves include Sorolla with the Ballet Nacional de España at the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona, La Bohème at the Palau de Les Arts of Valencia, Carmen with the Compañía Nacional de Danza in Cagliari, and also at  Festspielhaus St. Pölten and Los Teatros del Canal, Viva Madrid at the Royal Opera House of Muscat, El Caballero de la triste figura at Los Teatros del Canal – as part of the programme of Teatro Real activities in other venues, Don Carlo and El Amor Brujo with La Fura dels Baus at Los Teatros del Canal, Homenaje a Antonio with the Ballet Nacional de España at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Don Carlo at the Auditorio de El Escorial, Don Quijote at the Teatre de Sant Cugat, the Teatro Arriaga of Bilbao, the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa and the Teatro de la Zarzuela of Madrid with the Compañía Nacional de Danza and Metrópolis at the Auditorio de Galicia with the Real Filharmonía. We will also see him conducting Carmen, performed by the CND in the Festspielhaus St. Pölten and in the double-bill programme Enseñanza libre/La gatita blanca at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
