The Salzburg Festival will stage Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, with Dmitry Ulyanov in the leading role


Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, an opera in four acts by Dmitry Shostakovich, with libretto by Alexander Preis and the composer himself, based on the short story of the same name by Nikolai Leskov, has been scheduled for the current edition of the Salzburg Festival, with Dmitry Ulyanov on the role of Boris Timofeyevich Izmaylov. Performances of this new production will run from August 2nd through August 21st. Stage direction will be in the hands of German director Andreas Kriegenburg while musical direction will be by Mariss Jansons leading the Vienna Philharmonic and an exceptional cast that includes, in addition to Dmitry Ulyanov, Nina Stemme (Katerina Lvovna Izmaylova), Maxim Paster (Zinowy Borisovich Izmaylov) and Brandon Jovanovich (Sergey).
And this coming September, on the 12th and the 14th to be precise, the Russian bass will sing the title role of Boris Godunov at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre. On stage with Ulyanov will be, among other singers, Olga Kulchinskaya (Xenia), Elena Novak (Fyodor), Roman Muravitsky (Prince Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky), all led by the conductor Tugan Sokhiev.
