Vasily Petrenko to conduct Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Opernhaus Zürich

Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, an opera in four acts with music by Dmitri Shostakovich and libretto by Shostakovich and Aleksandr Preis, based on the story of the same name by Nikolái Leskov, will be mounted by the Opernhaus Zürich from December 12th to January 14th. Considered one of the most thrilling operas of the 20th century, this Shostakovich work is a biting satire of the political situation during the darkest period of Stalinism. Vasily Petrenko, the musical director of this production, will take the reins of the Philharmonia Zürich and the Chor der Oper Zürich. The production is by Andreas Homoki, who underlines both the ridiculousness and the tragic aspects of the work. In the main roles we will hear Gun-Brit Barkmin as Katerina Izmáilova, Pavel Daniluk as Boris Timoféyevich and Oleksiy Palchykov as Zinovi Borísovich.
